Can I use a steam cleaner on my couch?

I have a couch that I bought a couple of months ago, the material is like suede but it looks like leather, im not 100% sure what kind of material it is because i bought it in Turkey and its a different feeling, kind of like suede but not as soft.. i have a one year old and her drool and sippy cup (water spills) have left what looks like dirt marks or something. I just want to know if it would be safe to use a steam cleaner on it? thanks!
