What is the correct tension when crocheting with thread

I am using size 10 thread and a 1.65 mm steel hook. How do I know I am using the correct tension? Should the hook flow easily through the thread? Do I want to avoid loops with lots of space? I have a habit of making my tension too tight when am using yarn and I have learned to adjust but I don't know how to tell what is too tight or loose when working with thread.
