How can I get a squirrel out of my fireplace?!?

It has been a few days we have had a squirrel in our fire place, but our traps have not worked out so well, since he just ends up walking around a bit and once he hears something he runs back into the fireplace. Problem is, he is hiding in the pipes for the vents and we cannot poke him out of there because it actually impossible and we do not want to damage the pipes. I am sitting in my living room right now as he moves around in there. I read that the best thing to do is leave the windows and doors open, but problem is, we have a dog and two cats (which are locked up right now), and my cats did not get their rabies shots, so if the squirrel decides to stick around in the house, my cats are at risk. And my dog has killed squirrels in the past and we do not want it to happen again. I set up a paper grocery bag in front of the hole for the vent and smeared it with peanut er, and every time her is in there I call up my dad but when he hears my dad coming up, he goes back in the hole. My dad has the patience of a rhinoceros, so he gives up easily and goes back to watching TV. I myself do not want to have to do it because I do not want to get attacked by a squirrel. Any advice?
